Advanced Propulsion

Numerical simulation of a rotating detonation combustor

Research in the Ben T. Zinn Combustion Lab aims to enable the future of aerospace propulsion. We work in all domains of chemical aerospace propulsion: gas turbine engines, high-speed air breathing propulsion, and chemical rockets. We also collaborate with the Georgia Tech High Power Electric Propulsion Lab to advance the state of electric rocket technology.

Research topics in this area include:

  • Lowering pollutant emissions from gas turbine engines.
  • Enabling new domains of flight, such as supersonic civil transport and hypersonic vehicles.
  • Improving overall engine efficiency through, e.g., detonative combustion systems.
  • Making engines more robust and reliable.
  • Accelerating the adoption of sustainable aviation fuels.
  • Understanding and mitigating combustion noise.
